Before You Shoulder the Pack
The questions we hear most often, answered plainly. Where the honest answer is "it depends", we say what it depends on.
Batteries and Light
Why does my phone die in the cold even when the battery shows charge?
Cold increases a lithium-ion battery's internal resistance, so voltage drops under load and the phone shuts down to protect itself. Warming it in an inner pocket usually restores much of the charge.
Can I charge a power bank outside in sub-zero temperatures?
Most manufacturers advise against charging lithium-ion batteries below about 0 °C because it can cause permanent damage. Warm the bank and device first. See why batteries sag.
Which batteries are best for a backup headlamp in winter?
Lithium primary AA or AAA cells generally perform well in deep cold and have long shelf life, provided the headlamp supports them.
Staying Warm
Are heated gloves worth it?
They are most useful for stop-start activities such as photography or ice fishing. Runtime on high settings is limited and shorter in cold, so they complement rather than replace a good glove system.
Down or synthetic insulation for Nordic winters?
Down is lighter and warmer in dry cold; synthetic keeps more warmth when damp, which suits wet coastal conditions near 0 °C. Compare them in our insulation table.
Do I need crampons or traction aids in Nordic cities?
Pavements can be icy for weeks. Simple slip-on traction aids or shoes with winter soles are widely used by residents. Full crampons are for mountain terrain.
Keeping Dry and Maintaining Kit
What does IPX7 mean?
Under IEC 60529, IPX7 indicates protection against temporary immersion, typically tested at up to 1 metre for 30 minutes.
Is a rain cover enough to keep my pack dry?
Rarely on its own. A waterproof liner or dry bags inside the pack are more reliable, especially in wind.
How should I dry wet boots?
Remove insoles, loosen laces, stuff with newspaper and dry at room temperature with airflow, away from direct heat. More in our care sheets.
