The Thinking Behind This Fieldbook
We write for people who will actually be out there — commuters in Umeå, walkers on the Kungsleden, photographers waiting for the aurora above Abisko.
Start With the Nuisance
Every piece of equipment we discuss is introduced through the problem it solves: cold fingers, fading batteries, soaked contents. If we cannot name a real nuisance, the gadget probably does not belong in a pack.
Useful Details Versus Unsupported Claims
We separate design details you can verify — a glove-sized switch, a tethered port cover, a recognised standard such as IEC 60529 or ANSI/PLATO FL1 — from marketing language like "extreme-proof" or "all-day heat". When a claim depends on test conditions, we say so.
No equipment makes anyone safe from extreme weather on its own. Knowledge, planning and the willingness to turn back matter more, as the Norwegian Mountain Code has said for decades.
